Cocaine Purity Test Instructions

Intended use

The test is a rapid qualitative test to help identify presumptive drugs or suspicious substances. It is intended to be used by laboratories, law enforcement agencies, associations working to reduce the risks associated with drug use, and anyone looking to identify a suspicious substance.

The substances used for cutting may be harmless (sugar, flour, etc.), but it can occur in some circumstances that potentially dangerous substances are added (levamisole, phenacetin, ephedrine, etc.).

Sample spatula, plastic cap, glass ampoule with reagent, plastic ampoule with mixing liquid.

Instructions

Follow instructions carefully to ensure accurate results and prevent common issues. Read all warnings and notices that are presented and exercise caution where necessary.

  • Step 1

Prepare 20mg of the substance to identify (use a precision scale if available). Break the powder into very compact pieces (as close to powder as possible and no clumps) with the small hammer located at the end of the spatula provided or any other clean/sterilized utility that won’t contaminate the sample. *Lumps may distort the results of the test.

  • Step 2

Hold the clear glass ampoule (vial) in the upright position and snap off the top glass part while holding the plastic cover, using index finger and thumb. Keep it away from face so no residue splashes. Place it aside (it will stand on its own on a flat surface).

  • Step 3

The plastic cover has a built-in cap; twist and pull it apart to separate those two pieces. Discard the piece with the separated glass part and keep the small lid for use next.

  • Step 4

Twist and pull off the cap of the plastic buffer solution bottle (included in the kit) and insert the liquid into the glass test ampoule carefully by putting the tip in, and gently squeezing the liquid into the bottle so that no liquid leaks or escapes.

  • Step 5

Now insert the 20mg sample carefully into the glass ampoule.

  • Step 6

Carefully place the plastic cap on the opened ampoule. BEWARE: make sure that the ampoule is well away from your face, because it can happen that the cap pops off under the pressure of the chemical reaction. For this reason, ALWAYS hold the cap on while mixing and waiting for the result with your finger and thumb (one on top of the plastic cap, and one on the bottom of the glass ampoule.

  • Step 7

Now insert the 20mg sample carefully into the glass ampoule as indicated on picture 2.

  • Step 8

Wait 1 minute for the test to show results, then gently shake the ampoule for 5 seconds to mix any separated material and liquid to make the colour homogeneous.

  • Step 9

Compare the colour change (if any) with the colours on the colour chart included in the leaflet.

  • Step 10

You can then dispose of everything together into a rubbish bin without any harm to the environment.

Results comparison

Compare the colour change (if any) with the colours on the colour chart seen here or in the provided card in your package. If there is no colour change, that indicates zero presence of the tested substance.

Storage recommendations

  • Keep below <35°C (i.e. 95°F).
  • Store the ampoules in the original packaging and keep them away from direct light.
  • Keep the ampoules out of reach from children.
  • To avoid all risks of cut, use the plastic protective cap to open the ampoule.
  • Avoid eye or skin contact with the reagent or granulate. This may lead to irritation (first aid measure: rinse with lots of water). Wearing gloves is recommended.
  • Do not ingest, inhale or smoke the reagents contained in the ampoule.
  • Do not use after the expiration date.

Disclaimer

It must be included that a procedural or manipulation error, as well as the unexpected interference of certain substances, can cause an erroneous result. The use of this test must be done in full knowledge of the fact that no chemical test of substance identification can be 100% reliable. The results of a chemical test of substance identification need to be confirmed by a referenced analytical method such as GC/MS and HPLC-MS/MS. This analysis will also establish an exact dosage.
