What is Songkran?

Songkran is Thailand’s New Year, and it’s the biggest holiday on the calendar. Officially running April 13–15, it’s a celebration rooted in water — symbolizing cleansing, renewal, and fresh starts. Traditionally, people gently pour water over the hands of elders as a sign of respect.

That tradition still exists. But modern Songkran in Bangkok? It’s evolved into the world’s largest water fight. Entire streets turn into drenched battlegrounds. Silom Road becomes a kilometers-long water war zone. Khao San Road is pure chaos in the best way. Even the entirety of Sukhumvit Road has trucks driving up and down the streets with hoses shooting water at people from all angles. Strangers soak strangers. Everyone’s laughing. Nobody stays dry.

And then there are the festivals. Over the last decade, Songkran has become one of Asia’s biggest windows for electronic music. S2O and Siam Songkran are the two heavyweights. Both are running during Songkran week, both are pulling world-class lineups, and both are blending water and bass in ways you won’t find anywhere else on the planet.

If you’re in Bangkok in April, this is the week.

S2O Songkran Music Festival 2026

Theme: “Party in the Universe”

S2O is the OG Songkran music festival — the one that turned Thailand’s water holiday into an international EDM destination for the best DJs in the world. This year they’re transforming S2O Land in Ratchada into an immersive amusement park, and the lineup matches the ambition.

The most recognizable element of S2O is its futuristic stage design that has become famous. The production usually leans heavily into sci-fi visuals, massive LED screens, and lighting rigs synchronized with the music and water cannons.

Lineup by Day

April 11 — Opening Night

April 12

  • Zedd — electro-pop precision
  • Don Diablo — debuting CTRL ALT DEL project in Asia
  • Sidepiece — tech house duo behind major festival hits
  • Dabin — melodic future bass
  • Marie Vaunt — rising techno artist

April 13 — Songkran Day

What to Expect

S2O is wet. Not “oh there’s some water” wet — 360-degree water cannons synced to the beat wet. LED screens, pyrotechnics, and water jets hit from every angle. You will be soaked within the first 10 minutes. That’s the point.

The front rows of the crowd get especially intense. As the night progresses, the first 10–20 rows often end up standing in ankle-deep water from hours of cannons and thousands of people packed together near the stage.

The 2026 venue — S2O Land on Ratchadaphisek Road — sits close to MRT Thailand Cultural Centre, making it one of the easier large festivals in Bangkok to reach by public transit.

Another small difference if you happen to indulge in one or many drinks, is that S2O is partnered with Chang beer as the main drink sponsor inside the venue.

Siam Songkran Music Festival 2026

Theme: “The Melora” — Unified Thai Heritage

Siam Songkran blends international electronic music with visual elements inspired by Thai culture. While the festival has grown into a large international EDM event similar to S2O, its stage design often incorporates Thai architectural or cultural motifs, giving it a bit of a different visual style from S2O’s futuristic aesthetic.

The festival also runs one extra day, continuing the celebration through April 14 after S2O ends.

Lineup by Day

April 11 — Opening Night

  • ARTBAT — melodic techno powerhouse duo
  • R3HAB — global festival EDM mainstay
  • Vini Vici — psytrance legends
  • Ben Nicky — high-energy trance and hard dance
  • 22Bullets — Thailand’s biggest international EDM export

April 12

April 13 — Songkran Day

April 14 — Closing Night

What to Expect

Like S2O, Siam Songkran is a full-scale water music festival with large production, international DJs, and heavy water effects built into the show.

Water cannons and stage hoses blast across the audience throughout the night, and by the time headliners start the entire front section of the crowd is usually soaked. If you’re near the stage, it’s common to be dancing in shallow pools of water later in the evening as the ground fills from hours of spraying and crowd movement.

The festival takes place at Bravo BKK in the RCA district, one of Bangkok’s long-standing nightlife areas.

Siam Songkran is typically partnered with Singha beer as its primary drink sponsor.

Practical Tips for All Songkran Festivals

Protect Your Stuff

Almost everyone brings a waterproof pouch. Without one, your phone will likely be soaked within minutes, along with anything else in your pockets.

Wear the Right Shoes

Expect mud, water, and thousands of people moving around in a wet crowd. Wear sandals or shoes you don’t mind ruining, because whatever footwear you do use, will likely be a one-time use.

Expect to Get Completely Soaked

These festivals are built around water. Plan your clothing accordingly and avoid bringing anything you want to keep dry. YOU WILL NOT STAY DRY.

Plan Your Transportation

Songkran week in Bangkok means heavy traffic everywhere. Public transit, taxis, and ride-hailing apps all get busy around festival hours, so leaving extra travel time is always a good idea.

Harm Reduction & Safety Tips

Songkran is incredible, but Bangkok in April is hot, chaotic, and intense. Between the heat, the crowds, and hours of dancing in wet conditions, it’s easy to push your body further than expected. A little preparation goes a long way.

Heat Is the Hidden Risk

April is typically the hottest month of the year in Bangkok, with temperatures often reaching 35°C+ (95°F+) and extremely high humidity. Add alcohol, dancing, and dense crowds, and overheating can happen quickly.

  • Carry water and refill often. Both festivals sell drinks and usually have water stations.
  • Take breaks when needed. Step back from the crowd, find shade, and cool down.
  • Listen to your body. Dizziness, confusion, nausea, or suddenly stopping sweating can be early signs of heat exhaustion.

If that happens, move to shade immediately, cool down with water, and find festival medical staff.

Test What You Take

Substances sold as MDMA or other party drugs in Southeast Asia are often not what people expect. Tests in the region have found pills containing methamphetamine, caffeine, or unknown synthetic chemicals.

A simple test kit can help identify what may actually be present. Fentanyl test strips can detect dangerous contamination in seconds. Testing takes only a couple of minutes and can prevent serious harm.

You can order fentanyl test strips and reagent kits from Happy Test Shop with discreet delivery anywhere in Thailand.

Know the Law

Thailand has some of the strictest drug laws in Southeast Asia. Possession of many substances carries severe penalties, including long prison sentences.

Large festivals also typically have visible police presence and security checks, especially during major holidays like Songkran. Understanding the risks and making informed decisions is an important part of staying safe.

Get Ready for Songkran 2026

This is shaping up to be the biggest Songkran in years. Two world-class festivals, stacked lineups, and Bangkok’s streets turning into the world’s largest water fight, yet again!

If you’re heading to Songkran and want to be smart about it, grab a testing kit from Happy Test Shop before you go.
